Description
The North American Luna Moth, Actias luna, is one of the most beloved silk moths native to the eastern United States and Canada. Recognized by its pale green wings, long trailing tails, and soft, almost glowing appearance, it belongs to the family Saturniidae.
Scientific classification: Kingdom Animalia, Phylum Arthropoda, Class Insecta, Order Lepidoptera, Family Saturniidae, Genus Actias, Species Actias luna.
Adults live only about a week and do not eat, relying entirely on the energy stored from their caterpillar stage. Their long wing tails help confuse bats during flight, giving them a better chance of survival. Because they are nocturnal, seeing one in person feels a bit like spotting a small, drifting piece of moonlight.
This specimen is presented in a minimalist walnut frame with subtle gold accents that highlight the moth’s natural elegance. Other frame styles are available upon request. A black or white minimalist shadowbox is also offered at the same price.
Please note: these pieces are made to order using ethically sourced spider specimens that passed away naturally. Availability can vary, with some pieces ready to ship right away and others taking up to two weeks. Because these are natural insect specimens, immediate availability is not always guaranteed. Each specimen is entirely unique, with its own subtle quirks in size, shape, coloration, and symmetry, and may not look exactly like the photos shown. Those little differences are part of the magic of working with nature and are what make each piece a truly one of a kind work of art.
