About the Artist

Where childhood curiosity meets artistic devotion in the preservation of natural beauty

About

Alexa Martinez

Alex in Afterlife is the work of Cuban-American artist Alexa Martinez, whose fascination with animals and the natural world has been present since childhood, where collecting bones, insects, and fallen feathers became the foundation for a lifelong devotion to the beauty that hides in decay.

Drawn to what exists beyond the margins, Alex has always found kinship among outsiders and creators who live outside convention. Within this community she discovered a place where the strange is celebrated and the macabre is understood as a form of beauty.

Each piece she creates begins as a fragment of the natural world, a moth, a bone, a forgotten flower. Through ritual and preservation, these remnants are transformed into shrines that give permanence to what is fleeting.

While her days are spent in the ordered halls of corporate America, her nights belong to this work. In the quiet of her studio, she builds portals into a world where death is not final but alchemical, where reverence is found in ruin, and where the macabre becomes magical.

My work exists at the intersection of reverence and curiosity. I seek to reframe the natural world, to transform moments of loss into objects of beauty, to preserve what is fleeting, and to celebrate the strange and the sacred. Each piece is an altar to life, death, and everything in between.

“In preservation, I find a form of resurrection. Each butterfly wing, each delicate petal, carries within it the entire story of its existence. My role is not to capture death, but to honor the life that came before—to create vessels that hold memory, beauty, and reverence.”
